Eight Random Facts About Me

Most of you who read this blog regularly know me through our work together, but you probably know little about me outside of work. Here are a few random facts that you may not already know.

1. I've Buried Lots of Bodies

While in college, I worked at a cemetery for two summers where the caretaker and I dug graves by hand. A city ordinance prohibited us from using mechanized digging equipment, so we dug all of the graves with shovels. It takes about 3 hours for two people to dig a grave by hand.

2. I Dig Marine Life

I've had aquariums since I was 14 years old. My previous setup was a 55 gallon natural reef, but after the twins were born I downsized to a 14 gallon nano reef. It can be an expensive hobby, but it is tremendously educational and a relaxing way to spend a few minutes each week.

3. Grand Cayman is Where the Heart Is

While not in my near future, I'm constantly on the lookout for a way to spend my winters (and springs, falls and summers) working from the sunny, warm beaches of Grand Cayman. I missed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to purchase a house in GC two years ago and it's haunted me ever since. So, if anyone has advice or personal experiences to move me closer to my goal, do share. :)

4. I Met My Wife When I was 15

My wife and I met in a 9th grade math class. We dated on and off through high school and college, and then eventually we married (obviously).

5. All I Want for Christmas is a Fishing Boat

Three years ago I sold my fishing boat and bought a hot tub. Granted, I use the hot tub more than I ever used the boat, but I'd much rather be on water than in it. Few things in life relax me more than floating on a lake, fishing pole in hand, whether I'm catching fish or not.

6. I Ride a Motorcycle

Two years ago my uncle invited me to join him in a Rider's Edge motorcycle training course that Harley Davidson sponsors. I'd never ridden a motorcycle prior to that class, but after experiencing the thrill of acceleration and wind in my face, I was hooked. I couldn't afford a Harley, so I bought a Honda Nighthawk 750 instead and wow does it have zoom! I only ride about once every other week, but I enjoy every mile.

7. I've Ridden a Bull

It was a young bull and he was quite mild mannered, but I did ride him. Actually, I rode him several more times, but he was a steer then, and he happened to be one of my many 4-H projects. I raised steers and pigs during my seven years in 4-H and the money that my animals' buyers generously paid for them funded my first year of college. (Wondering what the difference is between a steer and a bull?)

8. I Own Two Vehicles with Over 200,000 Miles

I own two Chrysler vehicles that both have over 200,000 miles on them and are still going moderately strong. I enjoy not having a car payment, but realize that eventually I'll have to say goodnight to these babies, but until then I'll keep my AAA Gold membership active and see how close to 300,000 miles I can get.

I enjoyed reading your random facts! The one about owning and enjoying aquariums hits home with me; I'm in the same boat... er.. tank, having had countless setups over the years since childhood. Some 10 years ago I took the plunge and got into saltwater, and never looked back. I still have a 44 gallon ecosystem setup, which had been doing fine; adding a Remora C skimmer though really made a good thing better. Someday I'm going to 'surprise' my wife with a 72 gallon bowfront...

A 72 gallon bow front would make a terrific anniversary gift for your wife. Chances are good that you'd end up with it in the divorce that might immediately follow too. :)
